Heart Pine

Big It Up Heart Pine

Known best for their iconic tusks and trunks, the great desert African elephant, earth’s largest land mammal weighs up to 5 tons and stands 13 feet tall. These highly intelligent and social animals, always a tour de force against overwhelming odds, are under severe threat today from urbanization and illegal poaching. Thankfully nature triumphs through its “powers of adaptation”. Welcome to the age of the tuskless pachyderm phenomenon.

Like elephants, heart pine has a long history with humans. The Industrial Revolution demanded extensive logging and deforestation of pine populations for lumber and construction. Bridges. Railroads. Homes. Furniture.  And we’re paying a price for this. Quite literally.

An inch of heart pine only grows every 30 years. Our supply of heart pine is running out and the main way to get your hands on heart pine is to reclaim old lumber and recovering logs at the bottom of rivers.  Heart pine is a precious historic flooring choice. It’s prized for its strength, hardness, and vivid golden red color. Not to mention its resistance against insects and rotting.
